Itinerary

What you'll do and see

Day 1

Lima

A Lost World Adventures representative will meet you at arrivals in Lima international airport for a private transfer to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time you'll either stay at an airport hotel for an easy connection the following morning, or you can choose to stay in the fashionable Miraflores district.

Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

Day 2

Lima - Cusco - Sacred Valley

After an early breakfast your driver will take you back to the airport for a short flight to Cusco. Cusco is a heady 3,399 metres (11,150 feet) above sea level and so upon arrival we'll descend into the beautiful Sacred Valley to acclimatise.

You'll enjoy a guided tour of the Sacred Valley - heartland of the Inca Empire - starting at the market town of Pisac, followed by the fortress of Ollantaytambo, the oldest continually-inhabited town in the Andes. Your expert guide will explain the region's storied history, from its pre-Colombian civilisations to the Spanish conquest.

That evening you’ll rest at your hotel, the one-time colonial monastery Sonesta Posadas del Inca, in the Urubamba Valley.

Includes: breakfast
Sonesta Posadas del Inca Yucay

Machu Picchu tour

Day 3

Machu Picchu tour

The big day starts with an early-morning train journey through the Sacred Valley to the town of Aguas Calientes at the foot of Machu Picchu, followed by a connection up to the world-famous ruins.

You've seen the photos but nothing can prepare you for the moment when you reach the ridge and actually see Machu Picchu for yourself. With its sun temple, royal quarters, and purling fountains, this wonder of the New World has to be seen to be believed. Enjoy a private tour of the entire complex, followed by some alone time to explore, absorb the surroundings and marvel at the skill and ingenuity it must have taken to construct.

Includes: breakfast
El MaPi

Machu Picchu - Cusco

Day 4

Machu Picchu - Cusco

Most visitors feel one day at Machu Picchu is not enough. So the next morning, you can elect to hike up to the Sun Gate or climb Huayna Picchu, the sacred mountain containing hidden Inca shrines. From there, it’s back by train to Cusco. Spend the evening exploring this incredible city, with its picturesque cobbled streets and world-class dining.

Includes: breakfast
Maytaq Wasin Boutique Hotel

Cusco City Tour

Day 5

Cusco City Tour

Inca walls on every corner; three-tiered fortresses; Quechua women in colourful traditional garb: this is Cusco, which the Incas considered the spiritual centre of the universe. Even today, the city’s energy is unmistakable, as you wander through echoing churches and the most sacred Inca temple of them all, the Qorikancha. You’ll also visit several Inca ruins just outside the city, including Sacsayhuaman, the citadel where the Incas nearly defeated the Spanish in battle – and which is carved from some of the most massive stones on the planet.

Includes: breakfast
Cusco - Maras - Moray

Day 6

Cusco - Maras - Moray

The Inca were master engineers, and their skill is on display at these two sites in the Sacred Valley. At Maras, a checkerboard of small pools is filled with salt water from underground springs, leaving salt deposits that have nourished the nearby towns for 600 years. These deposits are one of the region’s key exports, with markets as far away as Japan. Meanwhile, in Moray you’ll find a series of concentric agricultural terraces in the form of a vast circular amphitheater. The Inca used these terraces for agricultural experiments, taking advantage of their varying microclimates to domesticate native crops. After your day-long outing, you’ll head back to your Cusco hotel to rest and enjoy the city.

Includes: breakfast
Cusco - Lake Titicaca

Day 7

Cusco - Lake Titicaca

After breakfast, you’ll depart for Puno, on the shores of the spectacular Lake Titicaca via private shuttle bus or the (optional) Andean Express train service, widely regarded as one of the finest train journeys on earth.

On route you’ll stop for a guided tour of Andahuayillas (whose baroque church has been dubbed the "Peruvian Sistine Chapel"), Raqchi, with its temple to the Inca god Viracocha, and the Pucara ruins.

Includes: breakfast

Lake Titicaca - Uros Islands - Taquile Islands

Day 8

Lake Titicaca - Uros Islands - Taquile Islands

The Uros people are one of the oldest cultures in the Andes, inhabiting floating islands they weave by hand out of totora reeds. On this full-day voyage out into Lake Titicaca, you’ll have a chance to listen to their stories and travel in their amazing “Mercedes Benz” barges. From there, it’s off to Taquile, a lovely green island gem amidst the lake’s shimmering turquoise, where you’ll hear from the locals about their highly prized textiles and ancient communal way of life. A high-speed launch takes you back to your hotel in the afternoon.

Includes: breakfast

Day 9

Lake Titicaca - Juliaca - Lima

After breakfast in your hotel your driver will collect you for the short drive to Juliaca airport for the flight back to Lima. If your schedule permits you can extend your trip for a night or two in Lima to explore the city's excellent museums and famed cuisine – a Lost World Adventures travel advisor will be happy to help.
