An easy-going trek to the iconic Poon Hill

Mixing heart-stirring mountain views with enchanting villages and beautiful forests with a thousand blooming rhododendrons, this is a fabulous, easy-going introduction to trekking in Nepal. The highlight is Poon Hill itself, an hour’s walk above the village of Ghorepani. Watching the sunrise from here is an almost obligatory Nepal experience.

Itinerary

What you'll do and see

Day 1

Kathmandu

Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu you will be greeted by a Himalayan Glacier representative and taken to your hotel to relax and explore the neighbourhood.

That evening you'll be treated to a welcome dinner hosted by Himalayan Glacier, a chance to enjoy the excellent Nepalese cuisine and meet your trekking group.

Day 2

Kathmandu

After breakfast at your hotel enjoy a guided tour of Kathmandu's historical and spiritual highlights, including the World Heritage Sites of Durbar Square, the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the famous 'Monkey Temple,' and the Buddhist shrine Bouddhanath, one of the largest stupas in the world. 

At noon, there will be a pre-trip discussion with your team members and trek leader for a briefing on the upcoming adventure and an opportunity to ask any last minute questions.

Kathmandu - Pokhara - Ulleri

Day 3

Kathmandu - Pokhara - Ulleri

Catching an early morning flight to Pokhara, you'll be rewarded with amazing views of Himalayan peaks including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Machhapuchhre, the five peaks of Annapurna, and more. 

Driving to the trailhead at Naya Pul you'll set out on the trek. Passing sub-tropical valley forests and dramatic cliff-edge trails, you'll cross the Bhurungdi Khola river into the village of Tikhedhunga. 

Ulleri Hill, with its thousands of steps and boulders, will test your stamina but you soon reach Ulleri where you'll spend the night.

Day 4

Ulleri - Ghorepani

After breakfast you'll ascend to Ghorepani, a village whose name means ‘horse-water’ as it has long been an important outpost for traders and travellers. Ghorepani has small shops selling local crafts plus panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. You'll spend the night here and prepare for another day of hiking.

Day 5

Ghorepani - Tadapani - Poon Hill

Today is the highlight of the trek – the iconic sunrise over the Himalayas. You'll start out early to reach the viewpoint of Poon Hill (3,210m/10,529ft), the most popular spot in the Annapurna region with amazing views of Mustang, Pokhara and more than 20 of the highest mountains, including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. 

The snowy peaks of the high mountains loom above and all around, glowing in the morning light. 

After photographs and a hot drink you'll return to Ghorepani before heading east, descending through rhododendron forests and waterfalls on the way to Tadapani where you'll overnight.

Tadapani - Ghandruk

Day 6

Tadapani - Ghandruk

The trail descends from Tadapani through the dark and dense forest of old rhododendron trees towards the village of Ghandruk, a hillside settlement with stone houses mostly inhabited by the Gurung people. Along with towering views of Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli mountains, you'll acquaint yourself with local traditions at the Gurung Museum in Ghandruk.

Ghandruk - Pokhara

Day 7

Ghandruk - Pokhara

The final day of hiking descends from Ghandruk down stone staircases and past terraced farms until the Modi Khola river and Naya Pul, where you rejoin the vehicles for the drive back to Pokhara.

Day 8

Pokhara - Kathmandu

After a relaxed morning you'll catch an afternoon flight back to Kathmandu. Enjoy your last views of the majestic Himalayas before spending the afternoon in the capital. That evening you'll enjoy a farewell meal hosted by Himalayan Glacier to celebrate the successful completion of your trip.

Day 9

Departure from Kathmandu

Say goodbye to your new trekking friends before a Himalayan Glacier representative takes you the the airport for your flight home or onward connection.

Our adventure in Nepal comes to an end today! A Himalayan Glacier representative will escort us to the airport approximately 3 hours before our scheduled flight. On our way home, we have plenty of time to plan our next adventure in the wonderful country of Nepal.
