Turquoise Lake offers some of the best hiking and wildlife viewing in Lake Clark National Park. Enjoy some of Alaska’s most incredible lakes and mountain ranges, and return refreshed from this wild place of natural beauty and solitude.

Itinerary

What you'll see and do

Anchorage to Turquoise Lake

A representative will pick you up in Anchorage by 8:15. Start with orientation/gear check before flying to Port Alsworth. Meet your guide(s) and complete the orientation with lunch at Lake Clark. Then load into float planes, for a short flight across the Aleutian Range. Make camp at Turquoise Lake, and take in the azure water and surrounding peaks.

Includes: lunch, dinner
Turquoise Glacier

Enjoy a hearty breakfast to fuel your day of hiking 12 miles in the grand canyon of Lake Clark National Park. Conditions allowing, hike six miles up-valley at Turquoise Glacier. Otherwise, you will head up into a side valley that feeds the Turquoise watershed. Here you can marvel at the 5000’ walls of the canyon and cascading waterfalls.

Includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Western high country

Break camp and head west into the high country. You’ll quickly get accustomed to the off-trail backpacking in remote Alaska, where the only trails are the ones made by animals. Your destination for the night is a cluster of alpine tarns beneath jagged peaks with views of the Turquoise Lake basin.

Distance: 4.5 miles

Includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Tundra hike in Sheep Lick Valley

Pack up camp and begin the trek to Sheep Lick Valley; your home for the next two nights is a river camp in a glacially carved valley. While the hike to the Sheep Lick Valley is strenuous and includes a climb of 1500’, the hiking itself is on a carpet of open and dry tundra.

Distance: 6 miles

Includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Sheep Lick Valley

This day is dedicated to exploration. Strip your pack down to carry only the day’s essentials, then you’ll look to the surrounding peaks for inspiration and head out on another long hike that will leave you in awe of Alaska’s beauty.

Distance: 5-8 miles

Includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Twin lakes

After breakfast, ascend out of Sheep Lick Valley, with views of Twin Lakes and Chilikadrotna River. Upon arrival at Twin Lakes, you’ll await the floatplane, and conditions permitting, visit Proenneke's cabin at Hope Creek. You’ll reach Port Alsworth by early evening and stay at the lakeside cabins at the Farm Lodge. Enjoy a shower and celebratory dinner, then tally up your wildlife sightings.

Distance: 5 miles

Includes: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Example accommodation

Tanalian Falls

After breakfast at the lodge, pay a morning visit to the Lake Clark National Park visitor’s centre where you can learn more about the area. Spend the rest of the day hiking to Tanalian Falls, before the afternoon charter flight to Anchorage. If departing Alaska on this day, please schedule all homebound flights for after 9 pm.

Distance: 5 miles
