Commissioning Editor

  • Type: Full time, permanent (3 month probation period)
  • Location: Preferably based in Sheffield, UK but will consider remote applications
  • Compensation: Competitive salary + stock options package
  • Closing date: 10 December

About the role

We’re looking for an experienced editor to join our leadership team and help scale our editorial operation. We have big ambitions and will be producing a lot of guides and new media formats over the coming years. We need someone to help make that happen, and play a central role in defining our brand and company culture.

You’ll work directly with our production team to fine-tune an efficient commissioning and production process that allows us to publish consistently excellent travel guides and other media at high frequency.

You will be managing multiple editorial projects and teams of freelance contributors at any one time. This means it’s essential to have a good eye for detail, and a meticulous, process-driven approach to your work. But you’ll also be the gatekeeper of our editorial voice, the standard bearer of our ultra-high standards, and a driving force in our creativity and innovation.

You’ll have a strong, supportive team around you and will be a pivotal member of our core team as we enter an exciting period of rapid growth. You’ll have a bias for independence and getting things done instead of excessive meetings and discussion, and will relish the challenge of making your mark inside an ambitious startup and helping set our future direction.

What's in it for you

  • This is a fantastic opportunity to join a fun, rapidly growing startup with an important mission and an industry-changing product.
  • We offer flexible working in a great environment at our Sheffield HQ.
  • You’ll join a team of passionate and dedicated people at a company that places huge emphasis on positive culture and personal development: the happiness and success of our people is our #1 priority.
  • A competitive salary and employee stock options to give you a real stake in the success of our business.

About you

  • You're a native English speaker.
  • You've got a strong interest and previous experience in publishing, particularly in professional editing roles and commissioning/managing teams of freelancers.
  • You've got a natural eye for what makes writing/media genuinely valuable and high quality, especially in the digital context.
  • You've got a meticulous eye for detail and an unwavering ability to concentrate on the painstaking work of editing other peoples' copy without losing focus on accuracy, quality, or deadlines.
  • You also have a creative edge and are constantly on the lookout for ways to do things better/faster/smarter.
  • You have demonstrated excellent people management and communication skills, both in-person and when dealing with colleagues remotely by email.
  • You thrive on self-reliance; you don't need to be led, you're flexible and willing to wear more than one hat as needed. You can take the inevitable setbacks in your stride, with a thick skin and a robust sense of humour.

  • Knowledge and experience of producing various formats (such as audio/podcasts, email newsletters, print publications, etc) is a major plus.
  • Previous experience in the travel industry/travel media is highly desirable.
  • Experience of working with design/production teams.
  • Experience with content management systems, Google Docs and publishing/production software isn't essential, but you'll need to be technically proficient and the ability to get up to speed quickly.
